Vandy Massey
My work explores aspects of the natural world that give me a sense of belonging. I grew up in South Africa where the expansive landscapes have instilled a deep appreciation for bold colours and the interplay of light and space.
Watercolour was my primary medium for many years, cherished for its spontaneity and translucence. I am captivated by the medium’s inherent unpredictability—the way pigments flow and merge on paper mirrors the organic rhythms of nature itself. This dynamic process fosters a continuous dialogue between control and surrender, allowing each piece to evolve in its own unique direction. In recent years I have expanded my work to include some acrylics, mixed media and oils. My painting style adapts to fit the characteristics of each medium.
My subjects encompassing landscapes, trees, florals, and abstract compositions. Each painting aims to evoke the essence and emotion of the scene rather than a literal representation. I am particularly drawn to capturing moments that convey a sense of freedom and movement, reflecting the ever-changing beauty of the environment.
Embracing experimentation is central to my practice. I continually seek new techniques and materials to open up posibilities, often incorporating elements of texture to add depth and intrigue. This openness to discovery not only enriches my work but also keeps my creative journey vibrant and evolving.
