Melissa Lhoirit
I was born in France and studied Applied Arts and Visual Design. I discovered printmaking while spending a year in the US as an exchange student.
Now based in Cambridge, I divide my time between working as a graphic designer and developing my personal practice as a printmaker, specialising in original linocut prints.
My work is characterised by a bold, illustrative style, using vibrant colours and strong contrasts to depict scenes of everyday life and evocative nocturnal atmospheres. People frequently feature in my compositions, with much of my inspiration drawn from familiar communities and local places. Each piece forms part of a broader visual narrative, contributing to the storytelling aspect of my work.
I enjoy working on themed series that evolve gradually. These explore subjects such as the relaxed feel of a British summer, the bustling energy of Cambridge’s streets, and the joyful connection between people, music, and dance.
Documenting my creative process is an integral part of my practice. I regularly share behind-the-scenes insights, including videos and photos of my linocut work in progress, under the name @meliprints.
I have been a member of Cambridge Open Studios since 2022. My work is also available at the Cambridge Contemporary Craft gallery. My artwork has been featured on book covers published by Candlestick Press.
